University of Massachusetts Law Review

The University of Massachusetts Law Review is a student-operated journal that publishes two general issues per year. For an article to be considered for publication it must make an original contribution to the scholarly literature on the topic. The UMLR strives to promote an open and close working relationship with all authors. To promote this relationship, the UMLR maintains regular correspondence with authors to update the progress of their articles as well as to resolve any problem that may occur during editing.

As policy, the UMLR edits citations in accordance with the 22nd edition of the Uniform System of Citation (“Bluebook” format). Any suggested changes made by the Law Review are approved by the author before the article is deemed ready for publication.

How to Submit

UMLR welcomes all interested authors to submit their work during our submission cycles. Authors are encouraged to submit Articles and Essays through the online submission system, Scholastica. We do not review submissions outside of the submission cycles.

When submitting, in addition to a complete manuscript, we ask that authors submit a CV or résumé.

Submission Length

UMLR strongly prefers articles between 18,000 and 30,000 words, (or around 50 pages max) including footnotes. Only in exceptional circumstances will we publish articles in excess of 35,000 words.

Author Policy

UMLR welcomes submissions authored or co-authored by scholars, practitioners, and judges with a J.D. or J.S.D. We do not accept J.D. student submissions from other schools.
